Portsmouth Abbey School is a coeducational Catholic boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12. Founded in 1926 by the English Benedictine Congregation, the School is located on a 525-acre campus along Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay, less than 30 minutes south of Providence and 20 minutes from Newport. Portsmouth Abbey combines a classical education in the Catholic intellectual tradition with Benedictine values. Job summary

The Assistant Director of Admission will assist in all aspects of admission responsibilities: recruitment, marketing, selection, and enrollment. The successful candidate will be joining a highly collaborative office and will be an innovative thinker who can operate both independently and as part of a team.

Candidates should be prepared to develop marketing strategies to attract applicants to the school. The ability to manage multiple projects and communicate progress appropriately is essential. S/he should be comfortable utilizing technology and databases. The candidate should also have excellent organizational, time management and communication skills. S/he must possess the interpersonal skills to relate and interact with adolescents, their parents, placement professionals, and the faculty and staff of Portsmouth Abbey School. The candidate must possess the willingness to travel frequently at times and work nights/weekends throughout the recruitment cycle and possess a valid driver’s license. S/he will be expected to represent and promote Portsmouth Abbey School in a positive and professional manner. In addition to joining the admission team, the candidate must be genuinely interested in participating in the responsibilities that are associated with a boarding school (school events, advising, athletics, and residential life) and embrace the mission of the school.

Prior admission and/or marketing experience and a familiarity with boarding schools are preferred. A bachelor's degree is required.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • 12 month position working as a member of 7 person team in the Office of Admission
  • Travel to fairs and schools serving as an ambassador for Portsmouth Abbey School
  • Actively engage in the recruitment of students and support their application process
  • Serve as an advisor to 5-7 students
  • Coach one season, volleyball a strong plus
  • Serve as a houseparent or affiliate in one of the student dormitories depending on school’s needs*

*Housing on campus subject to availability

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or climb. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.

Pension (403b): PAS contribution of 10%; employee contribution of 1%, after 2-year waiting period (waived with prior educational experience)
