My Semi-Homemade Alfredo Sauce Recipe (2024)

Wednesday, January 8, 2020

Get dinner on the table quickly with this semi homemade alfredo sauce. Start with a jar and add a few ingredients for an amazing flavor with less work.

I have two picky eaters and one that will eat anything. My kids are also learning too cook, and fettuccine alfredo is a quick and easy recipe that they can help with.

When I make fettuccine alfredo, I don't usually make it all in one pan. We cook the chicken or shrimp and veggies separately and keep the sauce and noodle separate too.

This way we can mix and match and create our own dishes. One kid eats just noodles, one kid eats just chicken, and one kids eats the veggies and sauce.

Making alfredo sauce from scratch takes forever, and jarred sauce is just too plain for my taste. This semi-homemade sauce starts with a jar, but it quickly turns in to a thick, creamy sauce that tastes completely homemade.

I'm not a fan of most jarred alfredo sauces. Most are thin and lack a rich flavor. My daughter likes to make chicken, broccoli, and noodles for lunch, so I keep a few jars in the pantry for her and for quick meals.

If I'm making something with alfredo sauce for dinner, I use my semi-homemade alfredo sauce recipe.
Feel free to use 2 percent milk instead of cream and low-fat cream cheese. I've made it with both substitutions, and it tasted creamy and delicious.

What is Alfredo Sauce Made Of?

Alfredo sauce is made from heavy cream, butter, and Parmesan cheese. I don't normally have heavy cream or shredded Parmesan cheese in my fridge, so that's why I make a semi-homemade alfredo sauce recipe.

What Can I Add to Alfredo Sauce?

You can add any of the following to Alfredo sauce:

  • Butter
  • Heavy cream or milk
  • Garlic
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Pepper
  • Basil

How Do You Stretch Alfredo Sauce?

Adding these ingredients for my semi-homemade alfredo sauce recipe definitely stretches it. You can also just add milk. If it's too thin, combine 2 tablespoons corn starch and 2 tablespoons of water and stir that into the sauce.

Can I Use Mozzarella Instead of Parmesan in Alfredo?

Yes, you can use either one. I don't usually have shredded Parmesan cheese in my fridge, so I use mozzarella because I always have that at home.

What's the Best Alfredo Sauce in a Jar?

Since I'm turning mine into semi-homemade alfredo sauce, I usually get mine at Aldi. As much as I love Aldi, I'm not a huge fan of their alfredo sauce. Doctoring it up does help though.

I buy one of the following when they are on sale:

  • Barilla Creamy Alfredo Sauce

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup shredded Italian cheeses
